The eyes and the periocular region play a major role in face-to-face interaction and in how mood and character are perceived. Changes of the eyelids therefore have both aesthetic and functional implications.
Changes of the upper and lower eyelids may make a person appear more tired or older than they feel. Blepharoplasty is therefore among the operations frequently considered in facial rejuvenation.
Upper blepharoplasty
Excess upper-lid skin may cause a tired appearance and, when it approaches the visual axis, may reduce the visual field. Asymmetry between the lids may occur.
Upper blepharoplasty may be performed under local or general anaesthesia according to preference. Excess skin is marked, an incision is made in the planned crease, surplus skin is removed, and muscle or fat may be reduced if needed. After haemostasis the incision is closed with fine sutures and covered with sterile tape. Hospital stay is not required. After general anaesthesia a few hours of observation are usual.
